Statement

I was always the artist of the family. I inherited my talent from my late, Great-aunt Josephine, and was a good draftsman from an early age. But as time went by, I realized that I couldn’t take credit for that talent; it was a gift. What I do take credit for is the effort I have made through the years to master my craft, those areas of printmaking that I focus on, linoleum, etching, and mezzotint. I am grateful to have found my medium, and will continue on the path to mastery of it as long as I am able to roll the presses.

Though I do an occasional landscape or interior, my preferred subject is the human face and figure. I have recently been inspired by various old family photographs of my ancestors. Though I don’t often get true likenesses, working backwards in the dark as printmakers do, I like to think I capture the spirit of the person. I explore the humanity of someone who came before me, and at the same time I am exploring my own, and in, a way everyone’s. I will always be fascinated by faces, and in trying to capture them I increase my understanding of where I came from, who I am and what I am here for. Though I’ve traveled the world, the journey I find the most rewarding is the one that goes from the start to the finish of a printmaking project.
