A graphic is a mark or impression made on a surface by pressure. In this case a mark is that of coffee grounds made by pressing a coffee cup against a surface. For a very long time the Balkan nations have had a tradition of drinking black (Turkish grind) coffee and a tradition of fortune-telling by looking into coffee grounds on the bottom of a cup. Dubuffet was the first to appear with an effect of being able, after some time, to see figures on an uneven surface—this is what our psyche needs, as it operates similar to the phenomenon of the Rorschach test. I want to launch a debate about dialectics of copy and original, object and representation, and raise a number of issues: the issue of media and auspice. How can an ancient medium of reading abstract pictures, strongly coloured by mysticism and brimming with suggestive definitions and speculative thoughts and advice survive in the age of expansion of electronic media conveying pictures. There is also a dilemma whether it is better to yield to this compelling ritual of most frequent form of socialization and have a cup of coffee seasoned with conversation and bonding or to fall into unavoidable asociality and spend time in front of TV, with, what else, but a coffee commercial in store for you.
