Statement

Drawing is the foundation upon which I build my work. The spontaneity of line, ink strokes and smudges, quickly capture the feeling and energy of my subjects. My work also involves the labor-intensive process of printmaking. The immediacy of drawing and the protracted process of printmaking serve as a very dynamic process in which I have been able to launch several ongoing series.

The prints submitted for this exhibition are from my new series of hybrid animals. These are a natural extension of my animal series, adding an element of scientific aberration. There is a long tradition of the depiction of mythological creatures. As this series relates to that tradition, it is my desire to imbue the prints with a look of being quite old and somewhat formalistic. One of the motivating factors in juxtaposing morphologically disparate parts is the obvious humor. However, as I accomplished these combinations more successfully, I was surprised to find that while I maintained the humor, a very disturbing horror also emerged.

The prints submitted are solarplate etchings that are based on ink and pastel drawings. I use an “aquatint screen” when exposing the plates in order to achieve a greater range of subtle lights and darks. The images are printed using sepia tones in order to give them a dated quality. I pulled these prints at the Lower East Side Print Shop in New York City, where I am a keyholder member.
